“Journey to the West” is inspired by a famous Chinese folklore of the same title. The original story is about four male characters who travel to the west and go through many trials and tribulations along their journey. In adaptation to this tale, this editorial feature women as the protagonists instead to highlight themes of female empowerment and feminism, as Chinese millennials adopt more Western attitudes and mindsets and oppose traditional and communist society norms.
