Reinventing Mexican Culture with Don Julio

While Mexican cuisine and culture is renowned worldwide, an intricate appreciation of the finer elements that build up the heritage of the country is rare to find. With an acute sense of quality, Don Julio, a pioneer in the field of tequila, was created by Don Julio González in 1942. Translating his passion for his country’s artisanal roots, he developed a Tequila that soon became an authentic classic. With a sweeter composition, and a more floral and fruity flavour than its counterparts, the Don Julio Tequila can be appreciated on the rocks, or is equally exquisite in Mexican cocktails, such as the classic Margarita.

don_201 don_003Celebrating the music and culture of Mexico, Don Julio hosted an evening of revelling in collaboration with i-D, showcasing the exceptional wealth of the flavours that build up the gastronomy of the country. With a series of recent journeys to the country under her belt, Gizzi Erskine shared her passion for modern Mexican cuisine at the event, baptised La Cantina Primavera. The evening’s events saw the authentic flavours of Don Julio reinvented and showcased in exceptional form. Don Julio mixologist Deano Moncrieffe orchestrated a surprise Don Julio tasting for guests, who discovered the variants and wealth of flavours that characterise the range. Cocktails enjoyed at the event included La Primavera, Don Julio Los Altos Margarita, Don Julio Anejo Old Fashioned and the Paper Heart.

b 75 DonJoined by a star-studded crowd of guests, including the likes of Mark Ronson, Millie Mackintosh, Billie JD Porter and Lou Hayter, Gizzi Erskine presented her love for Mexican cuisine, with a menu comprising of contemporary takes on sea bass ceviche and a chipotle short rib quesadilla, all catered for by Breddos Tacos. “The whole idea of celebrating fresh and original ways to enjoy food and drink is so me – I couldn’t wait to work on a menu to match these amazing tequila cocktails,” explains Gizzi Erskine, emphasising how La Cantina Primavera showcased “a truly unexpected side to Mexican food and tequila.”

b 64While guests continued to sample the original and authentic flavours of the ultra-premium Tequila Don Julio, the evening wound down into a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Opening up the country’s culture to new beginnings and uncovering new horizons, Don Julio presented an inspirational take on contemporary Mexico.
