Naïka is creating a world entirely her own — and inviting us into it. On her debut album Eclesia, the Franco-Haitian singer-songwriter fuses cultures, languages and genres to shape a boundaryless “world pop” record rooted in identity, connection and community. “I didn’t want to just release music,” she says to us for her Schön! 50 digital cover story. “I really wanted to create a world, because I never felt like I belonged anywhere.”
It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with many third culture kids. Born in Miami and raised across Kenya, South Africa, France, the Caribbean and even the South Pacific, she recalls “feeling very rootless… never enough of anything to fully belong”, though she has since come to realise that “home is other people, rather than a specific place.” Describing the album as “eclectic, human, vulnerable and warm”, Naïka has already seen its sense of togetherness reflected in her live audiences. “I see so much diversity in the crowd: people of all ages, ethnicities, races and religions coming together, and, to me, that’s so beautiful. That’s where my heart is.”
