review | chappell roan live in london

There is much to say when it comes to 2024’s hottest breakout pop star Chappell Roan. As she headlined London O2 Brixton academy to a crowd filled to the brim, there was no question that she’s already began to build an impressive music footprint and a loyal fanbase. Chappell’s opening acts were various British drag queens including a cast member for the upcoming new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. It’s an ode to Roan’s identity as we know it. The star has often mentioned her artist persona and aesthetic is heavily influenced by the drag world.

A lot can be said about an artist simply by the people that pay to see them and Roan proudly represents the queer community with fans being sure to incorporate whimsical elements into the concert outfits like glitter, gemstones and princess dresses in reference to Roan’s hit album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Seeing a legion of fans dress in blend of ultra feminine and liberated grunge is a testament to the star’s growing cult status.

Roan’s vocals were immaculate taking clear influence from genres like country and retro pop. The star performs with confident charisma stopping only to check on her fan’s well-being, speak words of encouragement and tell the tales behind her songs which the crowd knows word for word. As she dances around the stage with every line resonating harmoniously throughout the room, the energy was electric. Hits like Good Luck, Babe! and Hot To Go had the audience dancing in coordination and belting every lyric alongside Roan. It’s safe to say the pop music is in safe hands with the likes of Roan bringing it to life with catchy hooks and the star power to match.
