tissot x grendizer | sylvain dolla on the latest collaboration

When Sylvain Dolla, CEO of Tissot, talks about the brand’s collaboration with UFO Robot Grendizer, it’s clear this project brings out a personal connection. “Some of us grew up watching Grendizer. When the opportunity came to blend this iconic character with our watchmaking expertise, it just felt right,” he says. The collaboration taps into a mix of nostalgia and craftsmanship, with Tissot bringing its PRX line together with a Japanese pop culture icon.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Grendizer became a hit in Europe in 1978 — the same year Tissot launched the PRX, back then called the Seastar. “By merging Swiss watchmaking with Japanese manga culture, we’ve created something that really connects both cultures. It’s a piece that speaks to fans from both worlds and across generations,” Dolla explains.

What really elevates this partnership is the attention to detail, not just in the watch itself, but in its packaging. The watch box is designed after Grendizer’s UFO, the Spazer, giving it a distinctive and personal touch reminiscent of the main character’s iconic spaceship. Even the box sleeve is a nod to the manga’s roots, featuring original drawings by Go Nagai, the creator of Grendizer. Nagai himself expressed admiration for this collaboration, noting, “It’s fascinating that UFO Robot Grendizer and the Tissot PRX both started in the 70s. They come from different worlds, but the collaboration brought out a special meaning.” He elaborated on its significance, adding, “By merging UFO Robot Grendizer’s fight for a better future with the PRX’s journey of marking life’s milestones, we’ve crafted a watch that is a true tribute to their legacy and heritage.”

However, this isn’t just a watch for manga fans. The Grendizer collaboration also reframes the PRX line for those who’ve always loved the classic Tissot model. “The Grendizer collaboration brings positive nostalgia for fans of the late 70s show, connecting them to Swiss watchmaking through the PRX. For PRX enthusiasts, it offers a fresh, exclusive take on their favourite timepiece, merging its sleek design with a cultural icon,” Dolla says. It’s a rare crossover where both watch lovers and pop culture enthusiasts can find something to connect with. “This crossover taps into childhood memories, adding emotional value to the watch.”

For those unfamiliar with Grendizer, Dolla believes the Grendizer U series has something special to offer too. “It offers a chance to relive those cherished moments in a fresh, modern way. For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to discover a beloved story that has captivated audiences for decades. The goal is to create a connection between the past and present, bringing together long-time fans and new viewers alike to enjoy this iconic universe.”

And is this collaboration a sign of things to come? Dolla hints at the possibility. “While we don’t like to give away all our secrets just yet, the success of the PRX Grendizer collaboration has definitely opened the door for more fun possibilities.” It’s not hard to imagine Tissot diving deeper into pop culture partnerships in the future.

As the watch world increasingly shifts toward digital and smartwatches, Dolla remains confident in the lasting appeal of traditional timepieces like the PRX. “I believe that traditional timepieces, such as the PRX will always have a special place, especially for those who appreciate the craftsmanship and classic appeal of a watch.” But Tissot is not standing still. Dolla points to models like the T-Touch Connect Sport, which combine the elegance of Swiss watchmaking with modern technology: “It’s still very much a watch at heart, but with the added benefits of up-to-date tech features.”

Looking to the future, Dolla emphasises the importance of balancing innovation with tradition. “The next chapter for us is about evolving with the times while staying true to our essence. We’re uplifting the brand image with new products and campaigns that break the traditional code and answer the demands of today’s customers. We are also constantly exploring new materials and innovations while preserving what makes Tissot special.”

Sustainability is also on Tissot’s radar, as Dolla explains their steps to be more eco-conscious. “For example, we’ve introduced new watch boxes made primarily from recycled and recyclable materials. These boxes maintain the high-quality feel while reducing environmental impact.” He adds, “Our T-Touch Connect Solar and T-Touch Connect Sport is a great example of incorporating sustainability with technology. The solar-powered watch doesn’t require recharging, which means it’s built to last longer with less environmental strain.”

Through all these changes, Dolla finds inspiration from Tissot’s long history. “For me, working at Tissot is incredibly inspiring thanks to the brand’s rich heritage. There’s a unique sense of pride in being part of a company with such deep historical roots, and that legacy serves as a constant source of motivation.” He is driven by the challenge of keeping the brand relevant while staying true to its core values. “Tissot has consistently embraced this balance, as demonstrated by models like the PRX, PR516, and T-Touch Connect Sport. We honour our traditions but are also committed to evolving with modern trends and technologies to shape the future of watchmaking.”
