The only thing on Ezra Frech‘s mind is the forthcoming Paralympic Games in Paris. The 18-year-old, who wears Violet Getty by Rosetta Getty, Tom Ford, Birkenstock and Dior for his Schön! 46digital cover story, has evolved from a newcomer and underdog to a favoured champion in the men’s T63 high jump, breaking the world record twice and setting a new mark at 1.95m to win his first world title.“I don’t feel pressure [to defend that title]. I don’t feel nervous. I don’t have any concerns about what will happen,” he says. “I love it when it all matters. I’ve dealt with pressure my whole life, so this is nothing.” He adds with a light-hearted laugh, showing the ease of someone accustomed to living beyond the norm.”
The athlete, although born without a left knee and fibula and had his lower left leg amputated at two, is equal parts determined and dynamic, steadfast in his goal of achieving gold. Competing in track and field ended up becoming a refuge for Frech — a place where he could defy the odds. “The track was the place I could separate from my identity of always being the kid with a disability. Sport was a safe haven for me and completely transformed the way I viewed myself,” he recalls. “My early connection to and love for sports is directly responsible for the confidence I feel in my disability now.”
Although he’s been preparing and training for this moment for years, Frech knows there’s always a little fun to be had, too. “Once I’m done competing, I will be going to the Eiffel Tower with the gold medal around my neck and watching it sparkle.” After a short break, later this fall the record holder will, again, begin training for the next 2028 Paralympic Games held in his own hometown. For him, everything is coming full circle.
