The pre-game tunnel has become the most competitive runway in fashion, which explains why everyone has been fixated on Oakley’s latest update on its ‘Players Collection.’ Handing over the design keys to Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown and Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé, the California optics giant is moving entirely past the lazy industry habit of token logo-stamping.
The ‘Players Collection’ is an ongoing initiative that originally launched in 2023 to let elite athletes treat performance gear as a blank canvas for their personal style. We have seen various iterations of this design ethos over the last few seasons – from Patrick Mahomes putting his stamp on the futuristic, angular BXTR frames to Lamar Jackson and Justin Jefferson leaning into heavy wraps. Mbappé himself previously experimented with retro-inspired shapes like the round, lifestyle-led HSTN silhouette and the side-shielded Latch Panel. Moving away from those earlier lifestyle-only experiments, this new drop represents a massive escalation in ambition, marking the first time the brand has engineered a full head-to-toe clothing line alongside an athlete.

Brown’s fashion input completely rejects typical, high-visibility training mesh in favour of a monochromatic, earthy cocoa brown palette. Built to handle the unpredictable transition between urban environments and outdoor conditions, the line balances modular layering with purposeful material construction. “For me, everything is connected: performance, creativity, identity,” says Brown. “It’s how you prepare, how you think, how you show up.”
The highlight is the Oakley Highland Jaylen Brown Signature Series sunglasses, fitted with high-contrast Prizm™ Ruby lenses and embedded with his personal logo. Meanwhile, the accompanying apparel acts as a functional uniform, packing the weather-resistant Latitude Soar Parka, a relaxed Latitude Veil Tee and the utility-driven Reserve Momento Cargo Shorts, rounded off by Meridian Low Ext footwear and a matching Reserve Utility bag.

The second half of the launch shifts towards a fast-paced street aesthetic with the Kylian Mbappé Signature Series Permian. Trading his previous retro shapes for a bold, rectangular frame architecture, the striker’s custom glasses feature deep-set contours paired with specialised Prizm™ Road lenses engineered to optimise asphalt visibility.
Adding an intimate layer of narrative detail, the geographical coordinates of his childhood hometown of Bondy, France, are etched along the temples, while his personal emblem is embedded directly onto the lens. “Style is a signature. These glasses are more than an accessory – they carry my roots, reflect my journey, and define how I move forward,” Mbappé says. “It starts before kickoff: the way you arrive, the energy you bring, the presence you carry.”
Much like designers, athletes are shaping the broader culture surrounding sport, and this capsule highlights a new standard for performance gear.
