velo x tomorrowland | inside ibiza’s echoes of tomorrowland

Connections are the invisible threads that turn unfamiliar places into memorable ones. Sometimes they take years to build, and sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one shared experience, or, in Ibiza last week, half a butterfly. On 17 July, Velo* and Tomorrowland brought ‘Echoes of Tomorrowland’ to the Tomorrowland Store, transforming a room full of strangers into something much closer to a festival crowd before the music had even begun. Schön! joined in to celebrate the festival’s start and discover how music (and some butterflies) can bring people together.

On the very same evening, thousands of People of Tomorrow were gathering in Boom, Belgium, for the opening night of Tomorrowland 2026, marking the festival’s first-ever night opening under this year’s theme, ‘Consciencia’. After last year’s dramatic pre-festival main stage fire, the rebuilt, colossal stage welcomed a portion of the 400,000 visitors expected across two weekends and 16 stages, continuing a story that began in 2005 with just 9,000 attendees in De Schorre Provincial Recreational Park. The performances were broadcast throughout the night via the One World TV platform, serving as the perfect backdrop to the live sets.

Inside the space, architecture inspired by the organic form of butterfly wings set the tone with sweeping curves and glass surfaces creating an environment designed for people to linger. Throughout the evening, international music personalities and lifestyle creators from across Europe gathered alongside guests from Spain and the UK, who all set out to complete the butterfly challenge – some even becoming professional matchmakers.

Prior to the event, each guest received one half of a beautifully crafted butterfly necklace and was encouraged to locate the person carrying the matching piece. Almost immediately, strangers began approaching one another, comparing shapes and colours before conversations naturally followed. Behind the playful concept sits research commissioned by Velo, which found that 61 per cent of people feel more comfortable expressing themselves after seeing others do the same, while 39 per cent of adults say building meaningful friendships becomes more difficult with age. The exercise became a surprisingly effective social experiment.

British DJ and producer Camden Cox opened the evening with a set that steadily drew people together. “What stayed with me from the night was watching total strangers connect so easily through a shared experience,” she says. “Sometimes all people need is a small invitation to start a conversation, and seeing the crowd use the physical butterflies to break the ice and dance together was pure magic.”

Later, Ukrainian DJ Korolova took over with a performance that mirrored the atmosphere unfolding across the dancefloor. “The dancefloor is one of the few places where people feel completely free to express who they are without judgement,” Korolova explains. “That’s the energy I felt throughout the night in Ibiza. It was incredible to watch everyone let go, show up as their true selves, and celebrate their originality together.”

Five consecutive victories as the world’s number one festival have made Tomorrowland far more than a music event, and Echoes of Tomorrowland explored whether its strongest quality can exist beyond the festival grounds. Community, after all, depends less on geography than on creating reasons for strangers to engage and connect with one another.

“By encouraging people to step outside their comfort zones and connect with others, we brought to life Velo’s belief that self-expression can bring people closer together,” says Malky Brown, Global Head of Content and Partnerships at BAT. The idea echoes one of Tomorrowland’s longest-standing traditions, where friendship bracelets have become symbols of openness between complete strangers. This time, half a butterfly simply offered a fresh interpretation of the same sentiment.
