crystal creations | swarovski x helmut newton foundation

There’s something glistening in the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Swarovski, the iconic family-owned business that creates stunning and spectacular crystal-based products, provides their crystal exhibits from the Swarovski Archive to showcase both in the museum and as part of a series of stunning calendar photographs that are part of the Swarovski Art Edition 2003. The series is part of a larger exhibit called “HELMUT NEWTON. BRANDS,” bringing together renowned and celebrated legendary photographer Helmut Newton’s imagery with the crystals. Swarovski’s Archive will be shown alongside the 12 calendar images that were once only exclusively featured in Newton’s photographs.

For museumgoers, this will be the first time the crystal exhibits will be seen by visitors. From a woman giving a cardinal a smooch on his ring to a man pouring champagne straight from a crystal-adorned shoe, the collection of images captures the brand’s beauty; works of art that embody the quality and craftsmanship the brand has created since 1895. The images, which were first shot in Monaco in 2002 for the Swarovski Art Calendar 2003, are viewable in a hall solely for the exhibit in Helmut Newton Foundation’s museum in Berlin. While browsing the iconic images, viewers can admire the crystal objects that were once photographed by Newton that are on display.

As part of the Helmut Newton Foundation’s dedication to championing Helmut Newton’s work to life by imagining unique approaches to displaying it, Swarovski’s archive represents motifs and artifacts that show the longstanding impact both the crystal creations and the timeless imagery has had on culture.

Check out the exhibition “HELMUT NEWTON. BRANDS“ now to May 14th in the Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin, Jebensstr. A virtual tour, hosted and guided by curator Matthias Harder, is available on the Helmut Newton Foundation’s website.
