Jutta Leerdam didn’t grow up dreaming of the long track; instead, she spent her childhood running field hockey pitches and tumbling in gymnastics halls. It wasn’t until she was 11 that she took to the ice seriously, but this relatively late start in the sport didn’t hold her back. “I don’t think any of my friends or family try to compete with me now,” she laughs, reflecting on her status as a national icon. “They just let me do my thing. They know they’re not going to win!”
Now 27, Leerdam has carved out a space in speed skating that is entirely her own. She is a World Champion (many times over), an Olympic silver medallist and a figure of intense independence in a sport often defined by rigid team structures. This season, as she looks toward the Milano Cortina 2026 Games in February, she has found a partner who understands the unforgiving nature of her sport. Leerdam has joined the OMEGA family as an ambassador. As the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic and Paralympic Games since 1932 and the Paralympic Games since 1992, OMEGA shares the speed skater’s obsession with time. “Time is everything,” Leerdam states simply. “It is the biggest thing in my sport and in my life right now.” The collaboration is a meeting of precision engineering and human performance.
OMEGA has evolved from handheld stopwatches to the Quantum Timer, capable of measuring one millionth of a second. In Italy, its Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE camera will record 40,000 digital images per second at the finish line – the kind of accuracy Leerdam relies on when gold is decided by a blade’s width. The partnership allows her to blend the technical with the aesthetic. Leerdam has always had a keen eye for fashion, often bridging the gap between performance gear and high style. She cites the OMEGA Seamaster as her personal favourite. “It’s a bit sporty, but it’s also very fashion-y,” she explains. “I can basically wear it every day. It’s classy, stylish. I really love that one a lot.”
