review | raye live in london

British singer Raye officially brought the magic of big band back with her tour ‘THIS TOUR MAY CONTAIN NEW MUSIC.’ The South Londoner commanded her home city on 2 March in a masterful showcase of glamour, drama and musicianship. For Raye, putting on a show doesn’t require background dancers or pyrotechnics, the artistry of her band and her vocals takes centre stage. Even when she’s surrounded by a symphonic orchestra of violins and trumpets, Raye’s voice holds as an instrument of its own.

Dressed in crimson, Schön!’s 2023 rising star entered the stage with the kind of cinematic grace you only really see in the greats of yesteryear. Opened for by her talented sisters Amma and Absolutely, a night out with Raye felt special as the artist managed to the bring the intimacy of a ritzy jazz club to the O2 arena. For music lovers, a Raye show is the equivalent of a sonic buffet. Her performance featured operatic runs, classical jazz riffs, an orchestral climax, poetic rap and even a nod to her dance music discography in the show’s finale.

She was chatty and humorous with the crowd, making the sold-out venue feel like she was singing just for you. Behind every song was a storyline and Raye was as vulnerable on stage as she is in her lyricism. She gave emotional ballads touching on universal struggles like heartbreak, addiction, depression, and sexual harassment. When she wasn’t leaving her heart on the stage, the singer made it her mission to speak life into the crowd, making every fan feel seen and heard with heartfelt words of encouragement.

The artist’s strength lies in her humanness in the face of such success. With superstar charm, she created an element of connection that had the crowd in the palm of her hand, singing in unison and erupting into applause whenever she asked. Backed by raw talent, impressive production and a skilful ensemble, the evening was a joyful celebration of an independent artist finally being paid her dues.
