Nobody at Red Bull Dance Your Style knows what song is coming next; one minute it’s Beyoncé, the next it’s ABBA and then suddenly somebody is trying to krump their way through an early 2000s pop anthem. Street dance looks very different when nobody gets to rehearse, which is exactly why Schön! headed to Hamburg’s sold-out Inselpark Arena as nearly 3,000 spectators gathered for the German National Final.

Inside the venue, 16 of the country’s strongest street dancers put their instincts on the line without a single judge, scorecard or carefully choreographed routine in sight. Every battle is decided entirely by the crowd, leaving the competitors to respond on the fly to whatever track lands in the speakers – whether the genre actually suits their style or not.

Before the battles began, Schön! caught up with several of this year’s standout dancers, each arriving with a completely different approach to the competition. Hip-hop favourite Franky Dee spoke about bringing his “main character” energy, while Dinipiri (DNPRI) reflected on the challenge of expressing individuality when every round can veer into completely unexpected musical territory. “Dancing in my style means freedom to me,” he says. “I use my whole body. My movements are very, very big. It’s full-body motion.”

Vehbi Can, better known as JR Game, whose style has built a devoted following online, arrived with a mindset that was “free but disciplined,” inspired by some heartfelt encouragement from a friend. “I play a lot with the pace. I can control the emotions with this,” he explains. Hip-hop dancer Luwam Russom, meanwhile, promised there would be no holding back. “I love being crazy on stage, to be honest. If I’m really free, maybe I’m jumping from the stage. Last time I jumped on someone. Everything’s possible.”

Getting to the Hamburg arena wasn’t exactly straightforward either, as dancers first had to battle through rigorous open qualifiers in Berlin, Cologne, Offenburg and Hamburg itself. A final qualifying round in Munich eventually narrowed the competitive field down to the final 16, who were joined on the main stage by invited wildcards representing the country’s diverse dance community. House, locking, popping, waacking, krump, hip-hop and voguing all shared the same floor, often colliding within the space of a few songs.

By the end of the night, one familiar face had conquered the floor once again. Russom claimed her third Red Bull Dance Your Style Germany title, adding another historic trophy to the national championships she previously secured in 2022 and 2023. Facing fellow hip-hop heavyweight Taylo in an intense final battle, Russom relied on reading the room, finding the music and giving the audience exactly what they wanted before they even knew it themselves. Perhaps a little radical power made an appearance too – or maybe not. “The power was missing, I was so tired,” Russom tells Schön!. “I think it’s an end of an era. It’s my third time [winning] and I think it’s going to be my last time. I simply left my heart on the dance floor and entertained the people. My biggest challenge was not giving up.”

Unpredictability continues to separate Red Bull Dance Your Style from almost every other street dance competition. Technique certainly matters, but personality, musical instinct and the ability to connect with thousands of strangers eventually decide who stays and who goes.

Russom’s win now sends her straight to the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Zurich on 24 October 2026, where champions from more than 50 countries will battle under exactly the same high-stakes rules.
