The following text for this Schön! online editorial was provided by photographer Shelby Maynard.

Individuality. The quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. This is the definition according to Oxford Languages. A special type of uniqueness in a person is exactly what gives us individuality. A word that gives us a gentle reminder to be who we are without fear; individuality.

After a rather cruel meeting with an agent in Milan; I considered quitting this industry all together. I remember thinking to myself; “Why do I want to be in an industry that not only tells consumers they aren’t good enough, but the people working in it as well?”. When I stopped for a second and thought back to all of the jobs, activities, and groups I’ve ever been apart of…it hit me; isn’t that just life? There will always be a customer to tell you that you didn’t put enough caramel syrup in their macchiato, or a dance teacher to remind you; “that was terrible, do it again,” or an over-priced bar that values someone with fifty-thousand followers over a regular paying customer.  These are the experiences that we can choose to make or break us.

The fashion industry is definitely not all bad. To me; the fashion industry represents a place where I feel at home. It is also an industry filled with creative inspiration, story telling, kindness, and acceptance. Of course not every brand or person within it represents this but in the words of Virgil Abloh; “When creativity melds together with global issues, I believe you can bring the world together,”. This is what I hope to bring to this planet; a sense of togetherness and to remind our fellow Earthlings that we just need a little resilience to get there.

In this diverse world called Earth, overrun by us, the people; each filled with our own unique sense of individuality. It important to find what is true to us. That is the goal with this project. We may not be famous or live exceedingly extraordinary lives. We may just be “New Faces,” to the rest of the world; but we do have a voice, and place in this world. All of us do, including you.
