messika | the moderniste campaign

Valérie Messika clearly believes that launching a new collection requires more than just a bit of sparkle. Messika’s latest ‘Moderniste’ campaign features Julianne Moore and Irina Shayk, two women who occupy entirely different corners of the cultural universe but share a certain lack of interest in playing by the rules. Photographer Ezra Petronio kept things simple by shooting them against a black void, stripping away everything except the gold and the personalities of the women wearing it.

Moore’s interest in art and architecture makes her a natural fit for a collection inspired by the clean lines of the Modernist movement. “What strikes me about the shapes Valérie designs is how they interact with the body. There is a purity to them that allows you to see each jewel and feel it respond to your physicality. They don’t feel separate from you. They feel like they belong,” says the actress and Maison Ambassador. Valérie Messika calls her “the perfect reflection of Moderniste,” a woman who’s sophisticated, confident and profoundly warm.

Meanwhile, supermodel Irina Shayk brings an energy that is far more absolute on the other side of the lens. “Independence of thought is what defines the modern woman. She doesn’t conform to a fixed idea of who she should be,” she says. “What I value most is clarity, the power of being direct and honest without seeking to overcomplicate matters.” As a long-time friend of the Maison, Shayk knows exactly how to capture that facet of femininity that Valérie Messika defines “incisive, polished and alive,” much like the gold pieces she wears.

The collection itself marks a new direction for the Parisian house, which has been shaking up the jewellery world since it was founded in 2005. For Moderniste, Valérie Messika decided to treat gold with the same reverence typically reserved for stones, faceting the metal so it reflects the light in ways that mimic a diamond. This is seen clearly in the Moderniste Rings and the Moderniste Tie Necklace, where the metal is sliced into planes. The designs draw inspiration from seventies architecture, focusing on structure over ornament and allowing volume to create its own poetry.

The Moderniste Bangle, available in polished, brushed or pavé finishes, acts as the anchor of the collection, with its octagonal edges mirroring the sharp geometry of a Le Corbusier building. The range extends to more experimental pieces like the Moderniste Two-Finger Pavé Ring and a variety of Moderniste Single Hoop Earrings, which come in small and medium sizes to allow for a more personalised stack.

Valérie Messika explains that for the design process, she played with geometry much like she played with diamond cuts as a child, aiming for pieces that outlast the moment and belong to no single era. This fusion of shadow and light proves that even the most basic shapes can become something extraordinary when you stop trying to overthink the process.

The range is available now at global retail locations and through the brand’s website. Discover more here.
