grimanesa amorós | the peninsula istanbul

This autumn, The Peninsula Istanbul glows brighter than ever with its acclaimed Art in Resonance programme. The hotel unveils two luminous new installations by internationally celebrated artist Grimanesa Amorós, coinciding with the 20th edition of Contemporary Istanbul, Türkiye’s premier art fair. From 24 September through November, Amorós’ site-specific works — titled PASSAGE and MARITIME — transform the hotel’s waterfront property into a radiant canvas where history, architecture, and technology converge. Together, they form a dual exhibition aptly named ‘A Wave of Time’, created exclusively for The Peninsula Istanbul.

Known for her monumental light sculptures that explore human connection and the rhythm of place, Grimanesa Amorós draws deep inspiration from Istanbul’s maritime heritage. The first piece, PASSAGE, illuminates the hotel’s historic clock tower. Within this century-old structure, light flows in choreographed motion, echoing the emotional energy of arrivals and departures once experienced at the site — originally built in the 1910s as a passenger terminal for Bosphorus ferries.

Suspended in the hotel’s grand lobby, MARITIME evokes the graceful form of a ship, symbolizing Istanbul’s enduring bond with the sea. Its gentle glow invites contemplation of the journeys, both literal and spiritual, that connect cultures across the waters. “It has been wonderful to have The Peninsula team’s support to create my vision,” said Amorós. “I found the maritime heritage of the city and the Bosphorus to be deeply inspiring, and I am sure it will touch all visitors who view the installations.”

Launched in 2019, Art in Resonance is The Peninsula Hotels’ signature arts initiative, supporting boundary-pushing artists around the world. Each commission provides artists with curatorial backing, production resources, and a platform to engage international audiences through immersive, thought-provoking installations. “We are thrilled to host these installations and to offer our visitors a deeper sense of engagement with the culture of our city,” said Jonathan Crook, Managing Director of The Peninsula Istanbul. “As the Art in Resonance programme recognises art, like travel, has a remarkable ability to forge connections and open dialogue across spheres of life. It is a privilege to further these aims through this exhibition, particularly PASSAGE, which can be seen from the Bosphorus and is meant as a visual gift to city residents.”

Born in Peru and based in New York, Grimanesa Amorós is renowned for her large-scale light installations that blend technology, architecture, and emotion. Her works have been exhibited worldwide — from The Peninsula New York to The Ludwig Museum in Cologne and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai. Amorós describes her practice as “an ongoing romance with the unknown.” After witnessing the Northern Lights in Iceland, she began using light as a medium for storytelling — a universal connector transcending borders and cultures.
