la d de dior | the new pastel timepieces

Since Victoire de Castellane first dreamed up the La D de Dior in 2003, the collection has acted as a canvas for her more playful instincts. The original inspiration for this watch is actually found in a man’s wardrobe. The Artistic Director of Dior Jewellery designed the very first model to look like a woman had borrowed her boyfriend’s watch and kept it for herself. This explains the oversized, masculine feel of the proportions paired with the delicate finish of a jewel.

This Autumn, however, the silhouette returns with a fresh perspective that feels lighthearted and full of life. It is a departure from the typical sobriety of watchmaking, opting instead for a palette that mimics the softest parts of a sunset and a design that puts multifaceted femininity at the forefront. Powdery pink, sky blue and a mellow yellow define this new chapter. Each piece is a total immersion in its chosen shade: the straps are rendered in single, solid colours that lead directly into matching iridescent mother-of-pearl dials; elsewhere, the Dior logo sits alone against shimmering surfaces, allowing the materials to do the talking.

Diamonds are, as ever, present in the mix to pull everything together. Every bezel and crown is paved with stones that catch the light, adding a layer of luxury to the minimalist frame. The contrast between the matte texture of the straps and the sparkle of the gems creates a balance that still feels very much like Dior.

Artisanal skill remains at the heart of the design, even as the colours lean into a more youthful spirit. The mother-of-pearl is chosen for its unique reflections, meaning no two dials are exactly the same. If the original goal was to steal a boyfriend’s watch, these new pastels make a very strong case for never giving it back.
