interview | tanner adell

There has never been a Country star quite like Tanner Adell. She may have the quintessential blonde bombshell aesthetic that has become a signature of the genre, but there is a distinctly raw authenticity to her music that feels both rebellious and refreshing. After moving from California to Nashville during the pandemic, Adell has steadily built a bold platform for herself. One that landed her a viral song with ‘Buckle Bunny’ and a feature on Beyoncé’s album ‘Cowboy Carter.’ Adell’s more recent music, like ‘Going Blonde’ and ‘Snakeskin,’ are a beautiful and vulnerable insight into the person behind then persona. As Country music takes its moment on the world stage, a star like Adell is right a the forefront, so it’s only right that Schön! got to know one of the genre’s most promising names.

What are some of your earliest memories of music?

My earliest memory of music came from watching ‘Grease’ when I was really little. A babysitter put it on for me and I became obsessed and couldn’t stop listening to the soundtrack. Since then, I knew I always wanted to sing and dance [and] perform for people but I had to overcome a terrible case of stage fright.

When you started making your own music, why do you think you were drawn to Country?

I was drawn to country music because it’s how I grew up. I was raised in Wyoming [for] part of the year and would watch my mother compete in rodeo competitions. Country music was everywhere in our house and I was drawn to the incredible storytelling that is so unique to Country music.

Country music is having a mainstream renaissance at the moment. Why do you think that is?

Country music is real stories and people are craving something real at this moment. Country music is about love and heartbreak and family – all the things that unite us in shared experiences.

When it comes to songwriting, do you tend to take inspiration from real life or fantasy?

My songs are inspired by personal experiences. I write my own lyrics and music and everything I write is directly related to something that has happened to me or someone I know. Life is the best inspiration.

What do you think your current music says about the era that you’re in?

I’m in an era of vulnerability and realness. [I’m] excited to share more of my story through music. ‘Going Blonde’ which I released earlier this year was a very personal track that allowed me to share with fans my personal adoption story. I hope by sharing my vulnerability, it will let others who may be in the same place know they are not alone.

When you’re not working, what can we find you doing?

I love rollerskating and making clothes! I love make-up and can go down a make-up tutorial black hole on YouTube.

Who or what are some of your style references when you’re putting together looks?

Fashion is something that I have loved since I was a child. Clothes and designing some of the outfits I wear on stage is a passion of mine. My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was little, but from an inspiration standpoint, I love ’70s and early 2000s designers.

You blend an eclectic mix of genres into your music. Is there anything on your personal playlist that people might be surprised by?

Don’t laugh but I almost exclusively listen to disco. I think I was born in the wrong era or maybe I was born at the right time to help others learn to mix genres and eras. I’m not certain.

Is there anything you’d like to tick off your bucket list this year?

Hopefully, I’ll be visiting Harry Potter world for my birthday!

Tanner Adell’s new single ‘Snakeskin’ will release on 4 June.
