Few performers radiate joy, strength, and authenticity quite like Danielle Brooks. From her breakout role as Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson in Netflix’s groundbreaking ‘Orange Is the New Black’ to her electrifying portrayal of Sofia in ‘The Color Purple’, Brooks has built a career defined by passion, depth, and versatility. She’s an actor who brings humanity to every role — whether it’s through the fierce resilience of her characters or her own warmth and humour off-screen.

Now, Brooks returns to the small screen for Season 2 of HBO Max’s ‘Peacemaker’, once again stepping into the shoes of Leota Adebayo — a character who quickly became a fan favourite for her heart, intelligence, and grounded optimism. Working once more with writer-director James Gunn, Brooks continues to explore the layered world of DC’s unlikeliest hero squad, all while expanding her own creative boundaries as a performer, writer, and director.

In conversation with Schön!, Danielle Brooks opens up about reuniting with Gunn, the energy on set this season, finding balance between projects, and what kind of story she hopes to tell next.

How was it to work with James Gunn again on Peacemaker Season 2? How has that journey and collaboration been? Has working with him taught you anything about acting, life, or being on set?

Ahh, it was wonderful. He’s a director who knows what he wants, so it makes the day flow much better. As an actor, I never have to second-guess if I’m delivering what he needs because he’s super collaborative and communicative. He is the clearest visionary I’ve ever worked with, and his work ethic is crazy. He makes me want to work harder.

At Comic-Con, you mentioned that Adebayo holds onto optimism throughout the season and has really become part of the group. How was that journey for her?

This season, every one of the 11th Street Kids is dealing with the ups and downs of life. Everyone has something they’re having to work through, but Adebayo is holding onto the positive. She’s really leaning into hopefulness and the belief that everything is going to work out for her own good and for the good of her counterparts.

Spoiler alert—last season, we got to know your character’s family tree. Will that be developed further in Season 2?

I’d love to tell you, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!

What can audiences look forward to in the new season of ‘Peacemaker’?

This season of Peacemaker brings new opening dance sequences, more action, more laughter, new characters, and more intensity… and get ready to see double.

Any funny moments or behind-the-scenes stories from filming this season?

I’ll never forget the day we were shooting an action scene in Peacemaker’s home. There was a breakaway chair on set, and while it initially had caution tape around it, the tape was removed right before we started filming. I must have been out of the room when they announced the chair wasn’t real because I sat right down in it. In less than a second, I was on the floor! Everyone got a good laugh out of that one.

With fall approaching, fans are ready to cozy up for Season 2. What’s the best way to watch the new season and what do you personally look forward to in autumn?

Get your favourite snacks ready, and make sure you watch it with a friend, family member, or partner. You’re definitely going to want to talk about it afterward.

You’ve balanced both movies and series so beautifully since ‘Orange Is the New Black’. What do you enjoy doing the most?

I love doing it all. I never want to be limited to just one genre; I enjoy pushing myself not just as an actress but as an artist. Lately, I’ve been getting into writing and directing because I feel there’s so much more to explore with my talents. You never know what you’re capable of until you take that leap—and I’m always going to take that leap.

How do you recharge between projects? Do you have favourite ways to relax, or rituals that keep you grounded?

I love to be home. I love catching up with friends or going to a cabin with my husband that is an hour away from the crib. I’ve been blessed to travel a lot with work, so I make sure I do fun excursions while travelling, like in New Zealand for ‘Minecraft’ or Canada for ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1.

When I’m in between projects, I like to just be home with loved ones. I also love working out—I work out 5–6 days a week, which really helps with my mental health but also keeps the glutes popping. I enjoy doing home décor projects as well.

What’s next for you? Any dream roles or genres you want to explore?

As far as acting, I’m ready to do a romantic story next, but I’m always open to a great story, no matter the genre.
