balenciaga aw26 | the clairobscur campaign

Balenciaga is playing with the light – again! For Autumn/Winter 2026, Pierpaolo Piccioli turns to the dramatic contrasts of High Renaissance painting, bringing darkness, radiance and sculptural form together in a campaign that gives the collection’s theatrical silhouettes a distinctly romantic edge.

Titled ‘ClairObscur’, the campaign is photographed by Robin Galiegue and stars Dara Gueye, Liu Wen and Anok Yai. The imagery places Piccioli’s sharply constructed wardrobe against an atmosphere of deep shadows and sudden flashes of colour, directlyreflecting the show’s preoccupation with the complex, intertwining paths of real human stories and the raw beauty found within imperfection.

That contrast is particularly evident in the outerwear. Hooded jackets, peacoats and blousons are exaggerated through dramatically high collars and rounded shoulders, creating enveloping cocoon shapes that seem suspended in mid-air. Rich leather, shearling and wool bring weight and texture to the silhouettes, while spontaneous, frozen gestures of fabric allow the body itself to provide the framework, pausing against the skin as if captured mid-motion on the runway.

Piccioli also revisits familiar Balenciaga codes through a more refined lens, bridging the gritty, urban edge previously established at the house with his personal expertise in colour-blocking. Dark neutrals form the foundation of the collection, interrupted by bursts of phosphorescent green, purple and red that seem to glow against the surrounding palette. Gold B-shaped buckles and understated jewellery add further points of luminosity, reinforcing the chiaroscuro effect that gives the campaign its name.

The accessories join the conversation, with the Hourglass Avenue Bag offering a new, highly sculptural interpretation of the house’s recognisable hourglass silhouette. Meanwhile, the Le 7 Bowling Bag embraces a more cocooning construction through layers of luxurious materials. Footwear introduces another side of the collection’s sensuality; alongside the twisted, magically suspended silhouettes created in partnership with J.M. Weston, the Bloom Pump and Midnight City Mule are defined by exaggerated curves, giving the otherwise architectural wardrobe a coquettish softness.

The Balenciaga woman moves between concealment and exposure, introducing a more poetic soul to the house where each contrast makes the other feel more powerful. The Autumn/Winter 2026 collection is available now in boutiques worldwide and online. Find out more here.
