As the Turkish Airline plane touched down in Bangkok after a long flight from Istanbul, we at Schön! alive could already feel the vibrant energy of the city pulsing through the air. But nothing prepared us for the serene oasis that awaited us at The Peninsula Bangkok. Nestled on the banks of the Chao Phraya — aptly translated as the “River of Kings” — this iconic hotel isn’t just a place to stay but a gateway to Thailand’s soul-stirring blend of tradition and luxury.
From the moment we arrived, the hotel’s impeccable service enveloped us like a warm Thai silk scarf. After a seamless in-room check-in, we savoured a leisurely breakfast at the River Cafe & Terrace, overlooking the river’s gentle flow. The welcome lunch in The Lobby was a delightful introduction to the group, complete with a group photo that captured our excited grins.
But the real highlight? An afternoon Signature Treatment at The Peninsula Spa — a “Travel Tonic” that melted away our jet lag with soothing massages and aromatic oils. As evening fell, dinner back at the River Cafe & Terrace featured fresh, seasonal dishes under the stars, paired with cocktails from their extensive bar menu. It was the perfect start, especially knowing the spa’s three-tiered, 88-meter pool, the longest in Bangkok, awaited for later dips.
The next day dawned with a sense of adventure. After breakfast, we embarked on the “Connecting with Thonburi” cultural tour, exploring the historic district’s hidden gems via the hotel’s private restored rice barges. Thonburi, home to stunning riverside temples, felt like stepping into a living postcard. Lunch was a dim sum feast at Mei Jiang, where refined Cantonese flavours danced on our palates in an elegant garden-view setting.
The afternoon brought an exclusive hotel tour, revealing secrets like the Naturally Peninsula Garden, where over half the herbs and veggies used in the kitchens are grown on-site. We even joined a Kombucha Making Class at Thiptara’s Upperdeck — a wellness showcase that had us brewing our own fermented elixir with fresh, homegrown ingredients. As the sun dipped, a Sundown Cocktail Cruise on the Chao Phraya offered breathtaking views and refreshing drinks, leading into a set-menu dinner at Thiptara. Surrounded by ancient banyan trees (one 120 years old, requiring seven people to hug its trunk!), the outdoor Thai cuisine was idyllic; traditional dishes infused with flavours that whispered of Thailand’s rich heritage.
The following day started early and spiritually. At 6 AM, we gathered for meditation with a monk, followed by the Tak Bat Alms Giving Ceremony at the hotel’s spirit house. It’s a ritual where over 2,000 guests participate annually, offering food to Buddhist monks — a profoundly moving experience that grounded us in Thai culture. Breakfast followed, fuelling us for the Bangkok Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew tour. Dressed modestly in long pants (as per the strict code), we wandered the opulent grounds, marvelling at the emerald Buddha and intricate architecture.
Lunch in nearby Chinatown was a bustling contrast, with street flavours that popped with spice. Back at the hotel, the New Afternoon Tea by Chef Jimmy Boulay in The Lobby was a highlight—delicate pastries and teas served amid dangling chandeliers and live music. The evening culminated in the Effervescence Champagne Dinner at Paribatra Aviation Lounge: an exclusive 7-course Chef’s Table that paired bubbly with exquisite bites. Perched high with panoramic views, it felt like dining in the clouds—fitting for a hotel with its own licensed rooftop helipad, the only one in Thailand.
The final full day offered flexibility, starting with breakfast at leisure. We opted for a Thai Boxing Class by the pool, channelling our inner warriors in a fun, energising session. Lunch welcomed us at ICON Siam, Bangkok’s premier shopping destination, followed by a tour of its glittering halls. The evening was free, so we dined leisurely, reflecting on the hotel’s art collection—over 50 contemporary Asian pieces, mostly Thai but spanning seven Southeast Asian countries.
Throughout our stay, little luxuries stood out: the rooms, starting at 46 square meters with river views, featured tech like tablet controls in 11 languages and nail dryers in marble bathrooms. The florist arranges 800 fresh orchids daily, and over 500 pairs of shoes are polished monthly via the hotel’s service. Even the annual blessing by 99 monks on November 19th (nine symbolising prosperity) adds a layer of auspicious charm.
As we departed, chauffeured to the airport in one of the Peninsula’s Rolls-Royce or BMW limousines, we carried memories of wellness, culture, and culinary bliss. The Peninsula Bangkok isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience that rejuvenates the spirit. With its oasis-like spa in a Thai-colonial building, complete with saunas, steam rooms, and poolside cabanas, it’s a sanctuary amid the city’s buzz. If you’re seeking luxury laced with authenticity, this riverside gem is calling.
