90s footwear makes a comeback

Dr. Martens at Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan FW14, Photography Ger Ger

It’s been a long time coming: the return of the fashionable flat. This season we saw it take a particular twist, with a 90s grunge footwear trend that screamed ‘Doc Martens!’

Since Dries van Noten sent his girls down the runway in Nirvana-apropos plaid sheers for Spring/Summer 2013, we’ve all been living in the 90s again. Now our feet have caught up, and boy, must they be relieved! Who needs stilettos when you’ve got too-cool flatforms at Stella McCartney (paired with stretch stirrups, of course), or simple, tried-and-true lace-up boots at Calvin Klein? Celine’s Pheobe Philo designed the closest thing to an elegant incarnation of the trend – distressed white suede, with a contrasting two-inch black platform, and a zipper up the centre – while Jackie Fraser-Swan collaborated with Dr. Martens for her sweet rocker-chick collection at Emerson.

Even Agyness Deyn is getting in on the action, with her new collection for Dr. Martens, which takes the trend even further to include platform sandals that will have you dreaming of pink Cali sunsets, and playing hooky on the steps of the local surf-and-skate shop.

One thing’s for sure: there’s never been a better time to put away your Jimmy Choos.
