Anchors aweigh! Candela’s Spring/Summer 2014 Presentation ships us off to the seven seas in her nautically inspired collection. The Uruguayan designer, Gabriela Perezutti, placed her dashing belles within a display decorated with ropes to emphasize their sailboat voyage. Swinging to the rock and roll beats of Little Richard’s ‘Tutti Frutti’, spectators encircled the models like sharks, admiring Perezutti’s traditional influences infused with elements of the postmodern city that is New York.

The overall feel of the collection was one of young glamour. For the hair, few girls sported side braids, others had Hollywood swoops, and the rest seemed to have been lost in the ocean with netting in their locks. Perezutti clothed her young maidens in silk ruffle gowns with colourful fringes and incorporated the ropes of the setting into the garments themselves. Orange and white ropes are used as belts to tie midnight blue, high-waisted shorts or as the shoulder straps of a navy silk chiffon dress. The Candela girl is youthful and romantic in a lace crop top with a multi-coloured fringe tassel skirt and bold mirror embroidery heels.

The triangular colour blocking in cocktail lace dresses, in sweet pink, white, navy, and a daring splash of scarlet, draws parallels to boat sails. This look is adeptly paired with cut out flats, revealing a similar triangle of skin. Perezutti also toys with contrasting materials such as grey cashmere and sheer navy lace. Transparent cardigans exude sensuality, while cashmere track pants bring the look back to a casual, yet refined nature.

The smell of sea and feel of sky linger in the air as the collection grows from youthful daywear to glamorous eveningwear. Short-sleeved cocktail dresses with bow detailing contribute to the fresh, hopeful spirit of these free travellers. However it was the seafaring princess in an off-white mesh gown with leaf embroidery in pewter who stole the show.

There weren’t any high and dry stragglers in this show. Candela’s collection let our soul and spirit fly into the mystic blue with her crisp sense of elegance. All aboard!
