envisioning barcelona fashion

With an aim to reinforce the links between design, manufacturing, production and marketing of fashion and textiles, 080 Barcelona Fashion Week kicked off its 9th edition on the 25th of January in the Plaça del Rei, the gothic epicentre of Barcelona; and even though we do not typically cover Fashion Week events, Schön!’s editor was fortunate enough to be invited to witness the spectacle of more than 30 designers and brands showcasing their autumn/winter 2012-2013 collections.

A spectacle it was; featuring iconic French designer, Pierre Cardin as the guest of honour. Wrapping up the four day whirlwind of Barcelona Fashion Week, Cardin’s collection l’imprévu, gave hope for the future of design, encouraging people to have the tenacity to face the unexpected. His futuristic designs take you to an alternate universe using pops of bright jewel-like colours as well as cutting-edge shapes to enhance the male and female figure.

Adding to the excitement created by Cardin’s collection, concluding the show, the designer held a lecture with 10 fashion students where he discussed his creative ideas as well as advice to up and coming fashion designers in order to emphasize education and training in fashion design.

The second day of Barcelona Fashion Week produced a plethora of exquisite collections including Miriam Ponsa whose mushroom inspired collection shed new light on life and regeneration through avant-guard and traditional design approaches using plaited fabrics and over-the-top volume.

Other notable designers included Juan Pedro López whose stained-glass window inspired designs incorporating luxurious hues of purples and glorious golds illuminated the catwalk;

as well as Mario Francisco’s brand Der Metropol inspired by the recent loss of a friend; the collection takes us on a journey of the emotions and turmoil we go through when we have lost someone close to us.

Desigual closed out the third day with an inspirational splash of colour. The collection ‘Rainbow’ was kept in true Desigual aesthetic featuring nothing but colourful and playful clothing seemingly fit for each model’s personality. Opening up their show with children invited the audience to sit back and relax and just have fun.

If only one word could be used to sum up 080 Barcelona Fashion Week, it would be ‘sensational,’ simply sensational.
